* NEW SONG ALERT!*

This song was just released today by Mat Kearney, who is probably one of my very favorite artists. I absolutely love his music and his incredible, emotion-filled voice! This is a great new song and I thought I would share it quickly so you can check it out on the day of it’s release.

I have seen Mat Kearney live an amazing five times, and had the opportunity to meet him about five years ago in Dallas, Texas. He is such a great talent and just a fabulous guy … and I love his signature hats. 😉

I have been following him and his music since 2005 and always get excited when he releases something new. He has been known to combine all types of music, including rap, hip-hop, folk, rock, pop, and now a little electronic mix. I really like it and hope that you enjoy this new song. If you have not yet had the opportunity to see him perform live, I highly recommend it.

“Princess Of China” by Coldplay & Rihanna

It’s Throwback Thursday! Today’s #tbt song is by one of my favorite groups and is the perfect song for today in China!

I am feeling very lucky to get to be with my Princess in China, and today we are off to see the jewel of China.

We are heading out to hike the Great Wall of China. We are not going to the refurbished, tourist section of the wall, but instead we have hired a guide to take us out climbing and hiking in a much more rugged area. I did a lot of research and our guide came highly recommended by many people who I spoke with from all over the world. (That, in itself, was fun! I reached out to people from all over the world regarding a shared experience and we instantly connected. Friends are everywhere!) Anyway, this sounds like the perfect adventure for me and my daughter. I am so excited and imagine I will have some great pictures to share.

Today’s song just resonated with me for an adventure day in China. I am so excited to be here and the video is an awesome look into the romance and allure of China. “Princess of China” is from Coldplay’s 2011 album, Mylo Xyloto. We saw Coldplay in concert following this album. It was the second time the entire family went to see Coldplay in concert – the first time was at Wembley Stadium in London in 2009 and the second time was in Dallas in 2012 – and so Coldplay is always at the top of my list as a family favorite.

Off to conquer the wall and marvel at a wonder of the world. I am feeling blessed today.

SONG OF THE DAY – “COMEBACK STORY” by Kings of Leon

The last two weeks have been incredibly action packed. My daughter finished up her second year of college and moved home, we flew to Arizona for my niece’s wedding, my daughter moved to D.C. for the summer for an internship, AND my son just got cleared to return to golf by his surgeon late last week.

All of it has been very exciting, but it was such a happy day when my son got cleared to play golf after the devastating injury he experienced on March 28 when he broke his left wrist just as golf season was beginning. He has been a trooper during the whole ordeal and has remained incredibly positive. He worked very hard with his therapist and his improvement is amazing – they say he is at 85% of flexibility and strength, which means he can begin to play. Hooray! Because he broke two bones and hyperextended the other area of his wrist, tearing all his ligaments, the doctor told him he will probably experience pain in the area of the hyperextension for 6-10 months! Yikes!

He essentially missed the entire high school golf season, but he was able to participate in a school golf tournament qualifier last Wednesday. It was his first real golf match since February, and the first time he had picked up a club in 9 weeks. He still has soreness and gets swollen when he plays, but he was anxious to get out there. He played amazingly well for his first real round of golf, but he missed qualifying for the tournament by one stroke. Pretty amazing for a kid who hasn’t played all season! He was obviously a little disappointed about being the 5th man, but he understood how difficult it is going to be to work his way back into his game.

The next morning, however, he got a text from his golf coach saying, “You are in! Early release at 1:45 for the tournament.” My son had been selected to play in the tournament after all. He thought maybe one of the other guys had a conflict for some reason, but what he discovered was even more amazing. The Captain of the golf team – a senior – had given up his spot to let him have the opportunity to play in a school tournament this season. The entire team was disappointed when my son got injured because they knew he was an asset for the team; however, this was one of the kindest things that I have seen a teenager do for someone else. He was thrilled to get the opportunity and went out and played that day shooting the second best score on his team and the third best score overall at the tournament. Nothing like a little motivation to help with your Mojo! 😉 Hopefully this is the beginning of my son’s “Comeback Story.”

With all the crazy and mean things that go on with teenagers today, I just really wanted to highlight something wonderful. I hope this young man who gave up playing that day for his younger teammate realizes how much he positively impacted my son, and what an incredible example he set for all those who saw his act of kindness. I think it speaks volumes about this young man’s character and I wish him the very best as he heads out of high school and onto his next adventure.

This song is from Kings of Leon. While living in London I really fell in love with the music of Kings of Leon … they were huge in the UK, much more so than they were in the US. It is really in the UK where they first experienced success with their music. Unfortunately, it was just a few years later in 2011, after I had moved to Dallas, that they had their infamous disaster show in Dallas where frontman – Caleb Followill – walked off stage and they did not finish the show.

The band is composed of three Followill brothers – Caleb (lead vocals & guitar), Nathan (drums), and Jared (bass) – along with their cousin, Matthew Followill (lead guitar). They just put out a new album – their 6th! – in September of last year called Mechanical Bull. This song is from that album and I really like it; the perfect song for today. I would love to see that they have pulled themselves together and can continue making the great music they are known for, rather than being known for all the rockstar party drama that has surrounded them since their initial success. We shall see, but hopefully this great song off their new album is, in fact, their “Comeback Story.”

I walk a mile in your shoes … And now I’m a mile away … And I’ve got your shoes.

SONG OF THE DAY – “HEAD FULL OF DOUBT/ROAD FULL OF PROMISE” by The Avett Brothers

Well, it has been a very busy and somewhat overwhelming weekend.

I moved my daughter to Washington D.C. this weekend for a summer internship. We moved her into her Capitol Hill apartment on Friday evening and then the two of us got to spend the next two nights and all day Saturday together in that great city. It was really a wonderful time to get to spend with her as she was getting ready to start a whole new life adventure.

I must admit that it is a learning experience as a parent to leave my 18-year-old daughter alone in a city. Okay … not alone – she has two roommates, but she will not be with me and that is a little stressful for this mom. I find that I am in awe of her all the time – she is incredibly brave, adventurous, and accomplished. I know that she will be amazing! So, I am discovering that this is a learning experience for both of us. I am so very proud of her.

The Avett Brothers are awesome. I absolutely love their music! They combine Americana, folk, country, blue grass, a little pop, and rock and roll like no other band that I know. The band is made up of two Avett brothers (Scott and Seth), as well as Bob Crawford, Paul Defiglia, Joe Kwon, and Mike Marsh. Their music captures life and the emotion of all that life brings.

I got exposed to The Avett Brothers while I lived in Dallas. I was a little behind on this one, but I was an instant fan of their music and have to thank a friend of my daughter’s for introducing me to the band after listening to him sing an incredible rendition of their song, “I And Love And You.” I have not yet been able to see them live, but they are currently on tour and I am hoping to make it to one of their live shows this summer; I have heard that they are a live band not to be missed!

Today’s song is an older song (from the 2009 I And Love And You album), but it totally reminds me of my daughter and I wanted to post it for her today. Tomorrow is her first day at work and, although I know she is nervous, she will be fabulous! My daughter sees her dreams like very few people I know and it is exciting to watch her reach for them. I hope that you love this song as much as I do.

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it.
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I’ll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out.

SONG OF THE DAY – “WAVE ON WAVE” by Pat Green

It’s Throwback Thursday!

Today I am posting something very different for me. This is a country song by an artist that I was not even familiar with until we moved to Dallas, Texas. I remember a friend of ours, who worked with my husband, told me that Pat Green was his favorite musician. Amazingly, I had just heard this song from my daughter who had a friend on her cross-country team who introduced it to her, or otherwise I would not have even known who he was talking about.

I actually really love this song. I love the movement of the music and I find the lyrics actually make me a little emotional. It is just one of those perfect songs that came together with all the elements. It is absolutely a roll down your windows and sing kind of song.

“Wave on Wave” is by Pat Green and was released in 2003. The song was his highest rating song ever and really threw him into the national mainstream attention, although he had been popular in Texas for some time and has been active in the music scene since 1995. I am hoping that some of you may not yet be familiar with this song. I think you will like it.

SONG OF THE DAY – “TWENTY YEARS” by Augustana

Music is amazing. There is nothing that stirs emotion like a song. This is totally one of those songs for me – I love the music and totally feel the lyrics.

I absolutely love Augustana! They are not a new band and, in fact, were formed in 2002 at Greenville College in Illinois. Hopefully, if you are not familiar with them, I am introducing you to something wonderful and, if you are already familiar with Augustana, here is another song you should add to your playlist.

I have been wanting to post a song from Augustana to this blog for some time, but just had not gotten to it yet. Today an announcement came out on Facebook that indicated to me it was the perfect day to share. Augustana just signed to Washington Square Music for a multi-album deal with a new album to be released in April. Along with this announcement, new tour dates beginning in April were also announced. Hooray!

I saw Augustana live just last year in January 2013 at the House of Blues in Dallas, Texas. It was a unique show because it was just Dan Layus and his guitar. The “band” itself broke up in 2011, but Layus continued playing music and carried the band name forward; Dan Layus essentially became “Augustana.” On the night I saw him, he just came out onto the stage with his guitar, didn’t say much of anything to the crowd, and then proceeded to play music straight for the next 2 hours! He was incredible and the audience was not only mesmerized, but sang along to every song. I could not say that he was an “entertaining” live performer in the sense of chatting it up with the audience, but he did not disappoint on the musical front. I enjoyed every minute of that intimate performance and look forward to seeing him again.

Dan Layus is the lead singer and songwriter of Augustana and the original founder of the band. There have been many changes and challenges over the years, but the one thing that has stood the test of time is the amazing music that Augustana produces. The music is incredibly heartfelt with a rootsy-rock feel, and it just bleeds emotion. Seeing him live, I would have to say that he is probably the picture of the “tortured artist.” He is incredibly passionate and just seemed to feel every note and word of every song.

If you find that you love this song, you may realize that you know other music by Augustana. I took a friend with me to the concert and when I originally asked her to accompany me, she said that she did not know the band. I asked her if she knew the song “Boston” and had her look it up on Spotify. She said, “Oh … I know that song. Wasn’t that on Scrubs?” 🙂 She was able to attend the concert knowing one song, but she left a fan. “Boston” is my very favorite song by Augustana, but there are so many to love, including “Twenty Years.” Another day of great music!

SONG OF THE DAY – “JUST THE WAY YOU ARE” by Bruno Mars

It’s Throwback Thursday! Today’s TBT song was originally posted as my daughter’s Song of the Day on August 14, 2010!

Okay, here is my ode to the Super Bowl. I thought I should give a shout out to Super Bowl and so I am posting a song today by the upcoming halftime performer, Bruno Mars. He has asked the Red Hot Chili Peppers to team up with him for the performance so that will be a very interesting combo. Can’t wait to see what they do.

I have not listened to this song in a very long time, but it brings back lots of memories and it is really a great song. I am excited to add it to my current playlist. He really is such a cutie … and what a great smile!

This song TOTALLY reminds me of our move to Dallas. We had just arrived in Dallas in the summer of 2010, after a move from London, when this song was released. It became our song of the summer. I remember driving around with the kids in the car and the air conditioning on full blast (we wanted the windows down, but it was Dallas in the summer. Ugh!) belting out the song. We all decided that we wanted someone to sing that song to us (okay, well maybe it was just me and my daughter that said that). 🙂

It was a challenging time (a move from London to Dallas … certainly couldn’t be easy!) and this song brings back those memories, but also lots of good memories of enjoying time together – blasting music in the car and singing along. My kids rock!

SONG OF THE DAY – “HAPPY” by Uncle Kracker

Today I am posting what I wrote yesterday. I did not have wifi long enough to get this posted, so this note is just a day late. I am still in Dallas and enjoying visiting old favorites. It has been a busy day full of friends for all of us. So, here is yesterday … 😉

Just a short note as I am moving on fumes today! I was in NYC last night at a private show with Ryan Star and got home about 1:00 a.m., just to turn around and head to the airport at 4:30 a.m.! Not a lot of sleep to get me through the day.

The kids and I flew back to Dallas this morning for a short visit. This song seemed appropriate for the day because I have two very happy kids, as well as some happy friends who are looking forward to spending time with them. I sometimes forget what it is like to return to a “home.” It is so familiar! Things are so easy! It actually feels comforting. I am looking forward to reconnecting with friends and just spending a few days enjoying the familiarity of an old home.

I began listening to Uncle Kracker years ago and really began to enjoy his music while living in Detroit in the early 2000s. This song is off his 2012 album, “Midnight Special” and just felt like the perfect song for the day.

SONG OF THE DAY – “Something Beautiful” by NEEDTOBREATHE

Spent a beautiful day in Central Park today. It is amazing the beauty that you can find right in the middle of one of the largest cities in the world. What incredible foresight to maintain an open space like that right in the heart of NYC! I feel very lucky to live near NYC and this amazing park.

I am sharing a song from one of my favorite bands – NEEDTOBREATHE.  I did not discover this group until I moved to Dallas, Texas where they have a large following. While I lived there, I saw them in concert two times. The second time (The Reckoning Tour) was probably one of the most amazing live rock concerts I have ever seen. They started with the song “Oohs and Ahhs” and it was just a truly rockin’ experience! I love their raw sound and the incredible lyrics of their songs. If you haven’t discovered this band, now is the perfect time!
