Throwback Thursday!

As I mentioned earlier this week, I have decided to dedicate a few days each week to a particular theme. I have often used Thursdays as a throwback day, but from now on it  will always officially be “Throwback Thursday.” I started doing a “Song of the Day” for my daughter back in 2009, and began this website in 2013. I have LOTS of music that I have shared over those years; therefore, I have decided to use this day to revisit one of the songs that I shared over the last 9 years.

Today I decided to share a song by Plug In Stereo that I shared on my daughter’s Facebook wall back in 2011. I just had to share this song today because of the song I shared yesterday. Plug In Stereo was the performance name of a young singer-songwriter named Trevor Dahl who played very sweet, emotive acoustic pop. I always enjoyed listening to his music and wondered what had become of him.

Much to my surprise, as I was looking up the names of the members of the group – Cheat Codes – there he was! I really had no idea that it was the same person, but I instantly recognized the name and face (hard to miss that fabulous hair!). I  just felt like I should share a song by him today. The two songs are about as completely opposite as possible and it is fun for me to see an artist evolve over time.

Workout Wednesday!

As I mentioned on Monday, I have decided to dedicate a few days each week to a particular theme. Wednesdays will now be “Workout Wednesday.” On Wednesdays I will post a song that you will find on my workout playlist, and that I hope that it helps you get motivated for your workouts.

This song has been a constant on my workout play list since November, but before you listen to it, I want to give you an explicit language alert. I have to admit that when my daughter first shared this song with me months ago, she wondered if I might not like it because of that, but I find this song incredibly motivating. Who doesn’t remember how it feels to be young? The answer (although we hear the F word multiple times) just seems fitting. 🙂

New Music Monday!

I have decided to dedicate a few days each week to a particular theme. Mondays will now be “New Music Monday.” On this day I will post a song from either a new artist that is up and coming or new music from an artist you may already know.

Today I am posting a new song from a duo that I absolutely adore. This is Hudson Taylor – an Irish folk pop duo with brothers Alfie and Harry Hudson-Taylor. This is their new single which was just released a couple of weeks ago and which is on their new EP – Feel It Again.

I have posted about Hudson Taylor in the past – back in 2013 and 2015. Click here to see those posts and listen to other fabulous songs by them. I have been following the brothers since the spring of 2012 and I just love their sound. I hope you enjoy this great new music.

One more thing. They are heading out on a North American tour with Gabrielle Aplin (UK artist and long time girlfriend of Alfie) later this month. I have been trying to work out my schedule so that I can see them. If they are going to be in your area, I would highly recommend you check it out!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my beautiful and amazing daughter!

I remember this day – 22 years ago – like it was yesterday. Cassidy made me a mom and the moment she was put in my arms … I fell instantly in love! Hard to believe that was 22 years ago today! Happy Birthday to my sunshine girl. Double 2s today!! I love you to the moon and back! ❤

Hey, I don’t know about you … 🙂

Song of the Day – “Up and Up” by Lennon & Maisy

January 16, 2018

I wanted to share this very cool cover by some incredible young artists and sisters – Lennon & Maisy. This song is originally by Coldplay and I always loved the song, but I have to admit that I am obsessed with this version. It is amazing!

Lennon & Maisy are sisters – ages 18 and 14, respectively. The duo were born in Ontario, Canada and come from a very musical family. The sisters are singers and songwriters and have been singing and playing numerous instruments all their lives. Music was their early passion and it seems that they were just born with this talent, having never taken any professional music lessons.

The pair seem to have such a sweet sister relationship and are absolutely adorable, plus they have the most incredible two-part harmony I have ever heard! I just love to watch them perform together. ❤

I have never watched the TV show, Nashville, but if you have you may recognize them.; they began appearing on the show in 2012. In addition to this song, you should definitely check out their cover of “Boom Clap” by Charli XCX.

Song of the Day – “Dreams” by The Cranberries

January 15, 2018

Happy New Year!

I am excited to get back to Not Your Mom’s Playlist for 2018 and have some goals for the site, and some fun changes to make to the page. I hope you will enjoy it.

Today I heard the very sad news that Dolores O’Riordan, the lead singer of The Cranberries, died suddenly in London at the age of 46.  Not much news has been released yet, but it is a tremendous loss. Check out this article on NPR.

I remember very well when The Cranberries entered the music scene. This song was released, on the album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We, in early 1993 during the very early years of my married, working life … and I was instantly hooked. It was one of the first new bands I remember during that time of my life. I loved Dolores’ voice and the musical sounds created by the band, which were so different than the music we had been listening to in the 80s. The music was refreshing, interesting, and beautiful.

Linger” by The Cranberries is a classic and a song that I absolutely love (and you should definitely listen to it too), but I think that today’s song really highlights Dolores’ amazing, unique voice and the incredible sound that was The Cranberries. I hope that you love this song as much as I do and that it sparks a memory for you. A tremendous loss of an amazing artist who left us much too young.

Song of the Day – “Family Is Family” by Kacey Musgraves

November 27, 2017

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you were able to spend it with family, friends, and those you love. I thought this song would add a little humor to the end of this traditional family holiday. Hope it makes you chuckle.

Thanksgiving has always been my family’s holiday tradition. I am one of four girls and each one of us has made Thanksgiving with our side of the family the priority and it has been the tradition for probably close to 30 years. As we each got married, had kids, and have now had some of those kids get married, our group has grown … and we have still made it happen! We had 22 of us together this year … only three people missing. That is pretty amazing and I feel very blessed! I love my family – the joy, the laughter, the support, the challenges, and yes … even the drama. ❤

Song of the Day – “Migraine” by twenty one pilots

November 13, 2017

Since I am working on Day 2 of a horrible headache, I decided it was the perfect day to share this song. I am certain this is not a migraine this time, but it is one of those totally incapacitating headaches that I hate!

On the bright side, I really like this song. I have been a fan of twenty one pilots for the last 5 years or so. I find the music incredibly unique. I have posted the video below which I think really gives an insight into their talent.

twIMG_1759enty one pilots is a musical duo from Columbus, Ohio that was formed in 2009. The duo includes lead vocalist Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. Over the past few years they have become very popular and have a huge following. My son saw them in concert in Charleston, South Carolina last year and it was one of his favorite concert experiences ever … I got a t-shirt. 😉

The songs are usually poetry-based, written and sung by Tyler Joseph. Sometimes he screams, sometimes he sings, sometimes he raps. Their music certainly pushes the boundaries of genre and it is hard to put them in one box because they cross over into so many styles. twenty one pilots bring a mix of piano (or keyboard), synthesizers, drums, vocals, and occasionally the ukulele and bass.

I hope you enjoy this song today. I am off for a “medical massage” to hopefully help me get rid of this killer headache and then I can enjoy the song without relating to it. lol

Song of the Day – “Soldier” by Foo Fighters

November 11, 2017

Happy Veteran’s Day! Today, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to all of those who serve and sacrifice for our country. I have so much respect for the many veterans and their families and want to make sure that I express that support and appreciation today.59fe3dc73bf9b.image

Today’s song title seemed fitting for the day. This is a brand new song from the Foo Fighters that was just released on October 20. It is a sweeter and more subdued sound from the Foo Fighters brand, and it is really a great song.

The song was released as part of the “7-Inches for Planned Parenthood” benefit compilation LP. All proceeds from the album will support Planned Parenthood.

As a mom, I just have to say how much I really like Dave Grohl. Earlier this year I watched an interview that he did with his mother and it was absolutely adorable. She talked about supporting her child who did not fit in the box and how she mothered a rock star. It was obvious how much he respected and adored her. It was one of my favorite celebrity/musician interviews (see below).

Song of the Day – “Better Than I Used To Be” by Mat Kearney (feat. Afsheen)

November 10, 2017

This song was just released today by Mat Kearney, who is probably one of my very favorite artists. I absolutely love his music and his incredible, emotion-filled voice! This is a great new song and I thought I would share it quickly so you can check it out on the day of it’s release.

I have seen Mat Kearney live an amazing five times, and had the opportunity to meet him about five years ago in Dallas, Texas. He is such a great talent and just a fabulous guy … and I love his signature hats. 😉

I have been following him and his music since 2005 and always get excited when he releases something new. He has been known to combine all types of music, including rap, hip-hop, folk, rock, pop, and now a little electronic mix. I really like it and hope that you enjoy this new song. If you have not yet had the opportunity to see him perform live, I highly recommend it.
