24 years!

Today is my anniversary. 24 years ago today I married my best friend! That is a long time and I feel very lucky that we found each other so many years ago. We have known each other since he was 15 and I was 16 years old and we have literally grown up together. We realized some time ago that we have been together longer than we were ever without each other. It is amazing how fast the time flies. I find that this is the perfect song today because life really is better with him.

Happy Anniversary to my missing piece. ❤

SONG OF THE DAY – “RIPTIDE” by Vance Joy

Just wanted to post a quick song today. I really like this song and have been looking for a day to share it. No riptides in sight, but we went for a big long walk down along the beach today and the tide was so far out it was incredible. So .. low tide, riptide …. sometimes the connections are weak. 🙂

This song is by Vance Joy (real name, James Keogh), a young Australian singer-songwriter from Melbourne. Keogh picked the name, “Vance Joy” from the Australian author, Peter Carey’s novel, Bliss. The song was his breakthrough and was not only on his first EP, God Loves You When You’re Dancing, in 2013, but led to his 5-Album Atlantic Records deal and will be on his debut studio album, Dream Your Life Away, in September of this year. The song has been a huge hit across the globe and I think we will see much more of Vance Joy in the days to come. He is incredibly talented and just a nice, down-to earth guy. He has been touring constantly this year and just finished performing at Lollapalooza. He will be opening his own US headliner tour in Dallas in October.

Have a great weekend!

SONG OF THE DAY – “CLASSIC” by MKTO

I just returned from a family trip to the mountains. My mother-in-law turns 70 years old this year and we all decided to do a family trip where the entire family was under one roof together. We rented a large house and everyone made it – even my daughter was able to sneak away from her D.C. internship for a couple of days. We had 19 people together, ranging in age from 2 to 70. It was an adventure! It is the first time that all of my husband’s family were able to get together at one time and spend a few uninterrupted days together on a vacation. I think it made my mother-in-law happy to have her entire family together, and I hope that it makes her 70th birthday a special and memorable event.

I felt very lucky that my daughter was able to fly in for the trip. It is hard to break away from a summer internship and so we were happy that she could be there. She had two nightmare travel experiences on both ends of her journey, even getting stuck overnight in Phoenix because she missed her connection, but she was a trooper through all of it. I am posting a song today that she and I listened to while we were together this weekend. She shared this song with me and, although I had heard it before, listening to it with her and having her show me the video really sold me on the song. I decided that it was definitely one that needed to be shared. She will be coming home in two weeks and I can hardly wait!

This song is by musical duo, MKTO, a name which is derived from the initials of the two artists – Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller. The two say the name also stands for “Misfit Kids and Total Outcasts” which they say is “just like the kids we were in high school.” Both members of MKTO were previously actors who met while filming the Nickelodeon show, “Gigantic.” Malcolm Kelley is best known for his role as Walt on the cult television show, “Lost” and also his role as Lil Saint from the movie, You Got Served. Tony Oller is best known for his role on “Gigantic” and on The Disney Channel show,” As The Bell Rings.”

MKTO‘s sound is a fun combination of pop, rap, hip hop, and soul. This song was their second single and was released in July 2013. They released their self-titled debut album in the U.S. in April 2014. MKTO is in the middle of their first U.S. headlining tour, the “American Dream Tour,” which started at the end of June. Interestingly, following that tour, they will open for Tony Oller’s former “As The Bell Rings” co-star, Demi Lovato, on the US portion of her tour.

I really like how catchy this song is – it is one of those songs that just gets stuck in your head and it makes me feel happy. I love watching the dynamics between the two artists and I find the chemistry between the two of them fantastic. They look like they are having loads of fun and they each bring such a different sound and style to their music. It is a Classic and I hope that you enjoy it!

SONG OF THE DAY – “YOUR FRIEND” by The Mowgli’s

Here is a great new song by The Mowgli’s. The song is from the soundtrack for the new movie, Earth to Echo. I have not seen the movie yet, but the pictures remind me of one of our old favorites, ET. I think every generation needs an ET. 🙂

We had a great weekend with some old friends that we knew when we lived in southern California years ago and who now live in NYC. It is so fun to maintain old friendships and to be able to reconnect. It is incredibly refreshing to have friends who knew me in a different time of my life and who knew my kids when they were little. It just adds such a nice dimension to always being new and having a short history with people. So, having friends on my mind today, this song just seemed to be fitting. Here is a shout out to all my friends … new and old, but particularly the old ones today (which I guess is just about everyone). I miss you and I am grateful for our history.

Have a great week!

I am traveling with my son at a golf tournament this week in (what feels like) the Middle of Nowhere, Massachusetts. I’m sure it is not as isolated as it feels, but it definitely feels like I am in small town New England. It is lovely out here and the course is beautiful; however, I could not get internet access out here yesterday. Luckily I have it today, so I am taking advantage of it now while I have it.

Today’s song is completely different from the one posted on Monday, but it is just as awesome. That is one of the things that I love most about music!

I absolutely adore the feeling of this song. It just makes me feel good and brings a smile. I think it is because I feel the same attitude that the song title suggests and I really find that feeling empowering. The lyrics of this song are inspiring. One of my favorite lines is:

“You’ve got to fill your mind with new horizons or your dreams will pack their bags.”

Those words make me feel like I need to get moving and exploring new things, be more creative, adventurous, and jump in and take a risk. I find that I feel like I can when I listen to this song. I challenge you to listen to the song and watch the video below and see if you can do it without smiling. I can’t do it … I smile every single time. I am sitting here at the golf clubhouse restaurant and I think people must be thinking I am some crazy woman as I am sitting at my computer with headphones on and a stupid grin on my face. haha! Maybe I should turn the volume up and play it for the crowd.

I know it’s strange and I digress

The fact that we can’t understand

The meaning of this life

Sometimes it’s hard to find,

But if we learn to look between the lines of things

And if we’ll open up our eyes we’re going to see

The sunrise.

Everything, everything’s gonna be alright, gonna be alright!

Mike Mains & The Branches are an Indie Rock Band with a great sound. The band was originally formed in Gainseville, Texas in 2009, but that same year relocated to Michigan, which is the home state of Mains and Briggs. The band consists of Mike Mains, Shannon (Briggs) Mains,  and Nate Wethy (Mike and Shannon were married in 2012). Today’s song is from their sophomore album, Calm Down, Everything Is Fine, just released in February 2014 and entirely funded by a PledgeMusic campaign.

Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY – “CALIFORNIA SUNRISE” by Dirty Gold

Well, I am missing California and this song just brings back the whole feel of California. I LOVE California! With all the moves we have made, the only one where I really cried about leaving was when we left Southern California. I think California is a difficult place to get out of your blood. It was the one place where my soul felt home.

We were lucky enough to get to spend time at Pebble Beach, California last week. My two boys were especially lucky to get to golf at Pebble Beach. For a golfer, I cannot think of anything more special.

“If I had only one more round to play, I would choose to play it at Pebble Beach. I’ve loved this course from the first time I saw it. It’s possibly the best in the world.”
– JACK NICKLAUS, 18-TIME MAJOR CHAMPION

Father & Son thrilled to be at Pebble Beach!
Father & Son thrilled to be at Pebble Beach!

While the boys golfed, I followed along to watch them play and enjoy the beautiful course. I have never seen anything quite so stunning! I have spent time in Carmel, California (which is the beach and town the course overlooks in some of these pictures) and I have even been running on 17-Mile Drive, but I have never before been on the 18 holes of Pebble Beach Golf Course … and that is just something truly unreal! Amazingly beautiful and, as they say, “the greatest meeting of land and water in the world.” How do you focus on golf when looking at those views?!

Just as proof that everyone wants to golf this course, while we were there we saw Michael Bolton and on Day One, the boys were paired with Carolina Panthers Head Coach (and NFL Coach of the Year in 2013), Ron Rivera and his wife. They were two of the nicest people we have ever met and, although it was not their first time playing the course, they were just as excited to be out playing the remarkable course as we were.

Pebble Beach is more than just America’s greatest golf course, it’s a national treasure. The beauty is unsurpassed and so is the drama created by so many thrilling, famous holes. No golfing life is complete until you’ve experienced Pebble’s coastline, following in the footsteps of Nicklaus, Watson and Woods and an untold number of everyday dreamers.”

Today’s song is by a group of young Californians from Carlsbad, called Dirty Gold. The band is comprised of brothers Lincoln (vocals/lead guitar) and John Ballif (keyboard/rhythm guitar), and friend Grant Nassif (drums). This song was released in 2011 (along with their album, Roar) while the boys were still in high school and it hit the blog world by storm. I hope you enjoy it and that it leaves you yearning for California like I am.

SONG OF THE DAY – “YOU’RE THE ONE” by Tyrone Wells

Happy Birthday to my husband today!

I just wanted him to know that I am thinking of him today. He is, of course, traveling on his birthday so it is hard to celebrate with him – so I am shouting out a birthday wish on this post. He had a 4am pickup this morning, which was a special birthday treat. Haha! I guess birthday celebrations are less exciting as we get older.

I have known my husband since he was just turning 15 years old and now he is turning … well, maybe we shouldn’t go there. Let’s just suffice it to say that was a LOOONG time ago! (Haha! Just kidding babe, you’re not that old. Well, actually … at least you are younger than me.) This is a fabulous song and just totally makes me think of him when I hear it. Happy Birthday to my One!

This song is by Tyrone Wells, one of my very favorite singer-songwriters. It is always hard to pick a single song to share by some artists when you like all of their music. I had the pleasure of seeing Tyrone in concert on Wednesday night in NYC at City Winery. What an incredible venue and just an amazing performance! I think you can totally tell a real talent when it is just an artist up on stage with his guitar singing. This tour was called “Closer Than Ever” and he made a point to return to his beginnings by performing at small, intimate venues across the country. It was just an incredible evening!

Tyrone Wells 3

Tyrone Wells is an amazing storyteller. He tells beautiful stories in his music and he was a great story teller on stage – he was at times hilarious, thoughtful, and poignant. He shared many stories and made a real connection with his audience. His show was sold out on Wednesday night and it sounds like that has been the case around the country. I would definitely see him again and would strongly recommend that if you get a chance to see him, you should take it. I believe there are only four more shows left on this particular tour in the next few days, but if you live in Phoenix, Denver, Minneapolis, or Chicago, you are in luck!

I love this song I am posting today, but you should definitely check out all of his music. A couple favorites that you might enjoy:  “Running Around in My Dreams” (one of my all time favorite songs), “Sink or Swim,” and “Time Of Our Lives” (the perfect graduation song).

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

To all the mothers out there, I wish you an incredibly Happy Mother’s Day!

I love that I have the opportunity today to make certain that I tell my mom how much I love her and how important she is to me, but I hope that she knows it every single day. I have an incredible mom. I think she is the most amazing woman and my life has been so blessed to have her as my mom.

I think my mom is so cool. She has always been such a “goer” and “doer” and really instilled that sense of being active and adventurous in me. She has so many amazing talents and always made our home such a wonderful place to be. Even today, I love going home to my parents house. I love the smell, I love the warmth, I just love being there. In fact, even though I am grown up and a mother myself, my mom is the only person I want when I am sick. She has always been the one person who makes me feel better. My mom is the most giving and generous person, and has always been my #1 fan and supporter (along with my dad, of course). In addition to all of these wonderful things, she is also just a great friend – she is supportive, kind, and just an awful lot of fun to be around.

My mom set the bar very high. I know that I am the type of mom that I am because of what I learned from her and because I strive to be like her. I am posting this song today, because it says just about everything I want to say to my mom. The perfect Mother’s Day song! I don’t think I have ever been able to get through this song without tearing up. I love you mom! Thank you for your unconditional love and support, and for not only being my biggest fan, but my biggest inspiration as well.

SONG OF THE DAY – “WHO SAYS” by Selena Gomez & The Scene

It’s Throwback Thursday! Today’s #tbt song was originally posted as my daughter’s Song of the Day on May 8, 2012.

I know that this song choice seems off beat for me, but I have to tell you that I just love this song. I find it totally empowering! It just makes me feel good.
.
I find this to be a great running and workout song, or just a great song when I want to dance around the house and tell off the world. haha! Also a good song as a reminder for my daughter and other young girls who are finding their way. So, it is an old song by a teen pop star – not my typical song choice – but it is a great song and I think you will like it.  I can’t say that I follow Selena Gomez, but I can say that I sure like the girl in this video and hope that she is still that girl.

SONG OF THE DAY – “EASY” by Sheryl Crow

April 11, 2014

Download_on_iTunes_Badge_US-UK_110x40_1004

I love it when the weekend rolls around. There is just something about that feeling of two days of free time, even though the weekends are typically crazier than the week days. The weekend just holds an allure and I find this song the absolute perfect weekend song. I hope that you can sit back and enjoy the song and the upcoming weekend.

I have always been a huge fan of Sheryl Crow. I think she is incredible and has only gotten better with age! She looks incredible, she seems happy, and her music is still fabulous. Sheryl Crow is a successful and celebrated artist, with 9 Grammy Awards and 32 nominations. I have been a fan of her’s from the beginning and have many favorite songs. I am fascinated that she has been able to cross so many musical boundaries and genres. She is absolutely a rocker and I love that rock star quality in her, but she has also been able to cross into pop, folk, blues, and, as can be seen in this song, country. Today’s song is from her eighth studio album, released in September 2013, called Feels Like Home and it definitely has a country feel to it.

I saw her live in Dallas and was a little disappointed. The sound at the Verizon Theatre was horrible and all you could hear was this thundering bass throughout her entire set, which made it difficult to even sing along because you could not hear her voice. I am hoping to get an opportunity to see her in a more intimate venue.
