Yes, yes … I know it has been a very long time since I have added something new to this blog. Let’s just pretend I have not been gone for so long and let’s enjoy a new song together. ūüôā

I have a song that I just love and have not been able to get out of my head.  Yesterday, I saw the artist live and so I decided it was the perfect time to share. This is such an incredible song and so timely. I dare you to listen to it and not feel the need to be more kind.

“In a world that has decided that it’s going to lose it’s mind … be more kind my friends. Try to be more kind.”

Frank Turner is a very passionate English singer-songwriter who just released his seventh studio album, by the same name as the song (Be More Kind), in May 2018. His music style could be described as folk-punk and this song, although definitely gentle and folksy, is certainly no different in it’s emotional personal – and political – message. I absolutely love his acoustic style of music.

I was lucky enough to get to see Frank Turner live yesterday afternoon in a very intimate setting. I went out on a sold out Rocks Off concert cruise in NYC and he performed for well over an hour while we traveled along the East River and the Hudson River. It was an incredibly beautiful afternoon and being on the water and listening to his music was a double treat. Turner played solo and the raw emotion of hearing him sing his songs was fantastic.

I would totally recommend seeing him if you get a chance. I have wanted to see him live for many years, but have ¬†never been able to make it work, so I was thrilled when this opportunity popped up yesterday morning. I love being spontaneous. ūüôā

I hope that you enjoy this great new song. I posted another song by him on February 16, 2014 called The Way I Tend To Be.” Check it out as well, it is one of my favorites.

Song of the Day – “Oh Darling” by Plug In Stereo, featuring Cady Groves

Throwback Thursday!

As I mentioned earlier this week, I have decided to dedicate a few days each week to a particular theme. I have often used Thursdays as a throwback day, but from now on it ¬†will always officially be “Throwback Thursday.” I started doing a “Song of the Day” for my daughter back in 2009, and began this website in 2013. I have LOTS of music that I have shared over those years; therefore, I have decided to use this day to revisit one of the songs that I shared over the last 9 years.

Today I decided to share a song by Plug In Stereo that I shared on my daughter’s Facebook wall back in 2011. I just had to share this song today because of the song I shared yesterday. Plug In Stereo was the performance name of a young singer-songwriter named Trevor Dahl who played very sweet, emotive acoustic pop. I always enjoyed listening to his music and wondered what had become of him.

Much to my surprise, as I was looking up the names of the members of the group РCheat Codes Рthere he was! I really had no idea that it was the same person, but I instantly recognized the name and face (hard to miss that fabulous hair!). I  just felt like I should share a song by him today. The two songs are about as completely opposite as possible and it is fun for me to see an artist evolve over time.

Song of the Day – “Up and Up” by Lennon & Maisy

I wanted to share this very cool cover by some incredible young artists and sisters – Lennon & Maisy. This song is originally by Coldplay and I always loved the song, but I have to admit that I am obsessed with this version. It is amazing!

Lennon & Maisy are sisters – ages 18 and 14, respectively. The duo were born in Ontario, Canada and come from a very musical family. The sisters are singers and songwriters and have been singing and playing numerous instruments all their lives. Music was their early passion and it seems that they were just born with this talent, having never taken any professional music lessons.

The pair seem to have such a sweet sister relationship and are absolutely adorable, plus they have the most incredible two-part harmony I have ever heard!¬†I just love to watch them perform together. ‚̧

I have never watched the TV show, Nashville, but if you have you may recognize them.; they began appearing on the show in 2012. In addition to this song, you should definitely check out their cover of “Boom Clap” by Charli XCX.

Song of the Day – “XO” by John Mayer

Just a few minutes to write tonight, so I will keep it short. Today I am posting one of my favorite covers. This song was originally recorded by Beyonce and her version and John Mayer’s version could not be more different. He originally performed his cover of it during a concert in 2014 and subsequently released a single studio version. I love this stripped down version of the song and hope that you do too. Enjoy the last few hours of your weekend!

Song of the Day – “Loves You Like Me” by Josh Kelley

*UPDATE: February 2018 – This song is now available!! Listen on Apple Music.

Today I am posting a song by Utah-based musician, Josh Kelley. Interestingly, when I bring his name up to many of my Utah friends, they are not familiar with him. Well, it is time to familiarize yourself. ūüôā

Josh Kelley is an incredibly talented artist and this is an amazing song! The lyrics are so heartfelt and mesmerizing. What wife would not want their husband to write this song for them?

This is a new song that was just posted to YouTube on Monday of this week. I saw Josh perform live in January of this year at the ascap Music Cafe during the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. I would swear that he sang this song during that performance. I vividly remember him talking about the fact that he had just written a song for his wife and he wanted to play it for her. His wife, Katherine Heigl, was there with their brand new baby who literally had been born just a month earlier. I remember walking out of that performance and saying to myself, “I cannot wait until he releases that song … it is beautiful!” So, I cannot guarantee that this was the song, but it sure does ring that memory bell for me.

I am hoping that Josh will be performing during the Sundance Film Festival again this year, but in the meantime … I just discovered that he is touring and will be in NYC at a small, intimate venue in December. Sounds like a great night out!

‚̧ ‚̧ HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! ‚̧ ‚̧

I am not a flowers and chocolate kind of girl on Valentine’s Day, but I love taking¬†the opportunity to tell those I love how much I love them. I hope that you have been lucky enough¬†to spend time today with the one that you love.

Establishing a tradition that I started last year, I am posting a song by David Myles for¬†Valentine’s Day. I love him and his music and this song¬†is just the perfect sentiment for the day. On top of that, David Myles is maintaining his Valentine tradition of giving away a free little love song.¬†Click here to make sure you get your free copy of this sweet love song.

“Somewhere All The Time” by Samantha Crain

I have not been very good at keeping up with my blog over the last few weeks. Funny how life gets in the way of things.

Amazingly, I have been at this blog now for an entire year! It has been such an interesting adventure. What I thought would be an easy undertaking was not always quite as easy as I thought it would be. Sometimes it became overwhelming and I have to admit I avoided it, but mostly it has been a fun experiment, a great way to share and explore my passion, and an incredible learning experience. As I evaluate the blogging experience of the last year, I can now begin to set new goals and work on improving.

Thank you for sharing this adventure with me. I hope that you have enjoyed the ride as much as I have, and I appreciate you hanging in there with me. New things are on the horizon. I can’t promise how quickly they will come, but they are coming … just as soon as I get this thing called life under control. ūüôā Speaking of which … so much to share with you in my next blog posts.

I am sharing a fabulous song with you today. It is one that I have liked for a long time from Oklahoma native Samantha Crains 2013 album, Kid Face. I love her voice and her natural sound with that guitar. The words to this song are perfect!

Last weekend I made a very spontaneous decision after learning that my husband’s flight would be coming in late. I grabbed my purse and walked down the street to see a concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. It is a renowned venue in the city and one that I had not been to yet. A show was playing there that night that I had wanted to see and so I was glad that I got the opportunity. Samantha Crain was the opening act and she was delightful. She is a small person and it was just her and her guitar on that huge stage; however, she was able to warm up that audience with her humorous stories, great songs, and fabulous music. Her music was captivating and enjoyable. I loved hearing the songs that I already knew and I heard many new ones that I can’t wait to have released.¬†Enjoy.

Song of the Day – “Orange Sky” by Alexi Murdoch

October 30, 2014

It‚Äôs Throwback Thursday! Today‚Äôs¬†#tbt¬†song is a favorite of mine¬†from Alexi Murdoch’s¬†first full-length album, Time Without Consequence, released in 2006 on his own¬†label.

I discovered Alexi Murdoch while living in London, England. What a find! I instantly fell in love with his music. This song is truly a gift from an incredibly talented musician and songwriter. I think it is difficult to find someone writing music like he does today. To me it feels like a deeply emotional conversation that I have been invited into.

I am a huge fan, but I have found him to be a bit elusive. Alexi Murdoch does not tour much, but when he does tour, his shows instantly sell out. He has quite a following and was listed as a “Top Ten Artists to Watch” by Rolling Stone after the release of his debut album in 2006. After a long wait, he released his second album, Towards the Sun, in 2011 to strong reviews. He has a personal love and connection with his artistry and music and has never signed with a major music label, even though he has had offers. He decided to stay an independent artist to maintain control of his music. In an interview with CNN Headline News in December 2003, he said:

“I really don’t want people involved in the creative process while I’m recording, who really don’t have anything to do with music, whose interest, by necessity, is just pure economics,” Murdoch says. “There is going to be something [at stake] other than just the integrity of the music.”

Alexi Murdoch is a Scottish musician¬†who¬†was raised in Greece until he was 10 years old at which time his family moved back to the UK and settled in Scotland. He attended Duke University in North Carolina and also lived for some time in California. His songs have received placements in dozens of films and television shows and it is likely you have heard one of his songs on¬†one of those shows. I hope you enjoy listening to this song. I can’t recommend his music strongly enough and if you haven’t listened to him before, check out his albums, I particularly love Time Without Consequence. ¬†I love all of his music and there are so many good songs to recommend, but definitely a few to start with include: “All My Days,” “Blue Mind,” and “Song For You.”

“My salvation lies in your love.”

SONG OF THE DAY – “LET IT GO” by James Bay

September 25, 2014

Download_on_iTunes_Badge_US-UK_110x40_1004

Just a quick note tonight with a song by one of my favorite new artists – James Bay. I have posted a song by him before (“Need The Sun to Breakback on February 3, 2014 where I give more background on the artist) and love his music. This is an incredible song and¬†James Bay makes amazing music. I love a guy with nothing but his guitar and a voice that¬†expresses¬†vulnerability, depth, and passion. I could listen to this song over and over again … which, to be truthful, I often do. It has become one of my favorite songs.

The song is from his new EP, Let It Go, which was released this summer. This is his third EP and I can only imagine the hype when he releases his first full length album.

James Bay is a young British singer-songwriter from Hitchin, UK who is one of the most awesome acoustic performers I have heard. The lyrics to his songs are honest, emotional, and introspective and the music is incredibly smooth. His performances are raw and unforgettable. He is currently on tour and if you are lucky enough to score a ticket (he is touring with Hozier and the tickets are selling fast!), it would be quite a performance. Just watch this incredible performance below and see if he does not become one of your favorite new artists, too!

Can I also just say, I LOVE his hats – he wears them even better than Pharrell.

SONG OF THE DAY – “WASTED TIME” by Vance Joy

September 16 , 2014

Last week I had the privilege of seeing Vance Joy live in concert. Sirius XM Radio hosted a private concert in The Studio at Webster Hall Рa very small, intimate venue. The concert was amazing! I absolutely loved the venue, the intimate setting was incredible, and the sound was fabulous. (Pictures below include the setlist which was taped to the floor by the microphone and the stage setup prior to Vance Joy taking the stage.)

photo_2-4                photo_1-4

Vance Joy¬†(real name James Keogh) is just what you would expect from a strapping young Australian – tall, dark, and handsome. ūüôā He is actually just adorable. He has this gorgeous curly dark hair and a very shy, serious face that intimates all of his emotions when he sings. When he cracks a smile, it melts the room.

photo_4

He seemed a little shy on the stage and was not a big talker, but certainly kept the music flowing and the audience entertained. He has a great band, all of whom seem to be enjoying themselves, particularly the drummer. I loved watching the drummer; there were certain songs when I looked at him and he had the biggest smile on his face that I have ever seen – it looked like pure joy.

photo-4

One of my very favorite things about live shows, particularly when it is just an artist and their guitar (essentially), is to listen to the clarity of the voice. Vance Joy did not disappoint! What an incredible voice, the instruments were just a nice accompaniment to him.

I invited a friend to accompany me for this show and we stood right at the stage edge immediately in front of the microphone. Seriously, my purse sat on the stage at Vance Joy’s feet. We literally could not have been any closer! There were moments when I wanted to reach up and strum the guitar. Not really, but you know that feeling when you think, “… if I just reached up I could ….” Some people feel that way about jumping off the edge of a cliff … not me, I just want to reach up and play the guitar. ūüôā

I posted Vance Joy‘s most popular song, “Riptide” as the Song of the Day back on August 2, 2014. Since that time, the song has grown in popularity and his debut album, dream your life away was released earlier this month (in fact, it was on September 9 in the US – the day of this concert). The album is fantastic and is loaded with great songs. I highly recommend checking out the entire album; it has a lot of variety and I think all of the songs warrant attention. It is hard for me to¬†just recommend a couple of songs, but if I had to pick a couple in addition to “Riptide” and today’s song, I would definitely recommend checking out “Mess Is Mine” (odd video, but cool song) and “My Kind Of Man” (if you want to see pure emotion from a singer and an incredible voice, check out this video!).

I love today’s song and the title really resonated with me this week. No wasted time going on in this home right now – we are in what you would call M-O-T-I-O-N! Enjoy the video and Vance Joy‘s music. Keep your eye on this young man from Melbourne, Australia, he is certainly a rising star! If you get a chance to see him live, particularly in an intimate venue, I would strongly recommend it.
