This has been such a crazy year and this little project of mine definitely went on the back burner. I have missed sharing music and spending the time to explore new music and artists. It has certainly been a missing piece of my life for the better part of the this past year.

This song that I am sharing today is one that really moves me. I can sit and listen to it for hours and seem to cry every time. Don’t exactly know why, but maybe you will understand the emotionality of it when you take a listen. I absolutely love the lyrics and the story that they tell, and his voice is just breathtaking. I am posting the live version of the song below so that you can get the full impact of his amazing, honest sound (he is a “classically educated soprano soloist from [the celebrated] Copenhagen’s Boys Choir”). Just incredible!

Lukas Graham is a young, 23-year old singer-songwriter from Copenhagen, Denmark who has had an amazing rise. He is a true songwriter and you can learn much about his life listening to his music. He is probably one of the most genuine and authentic artists I have seen in a long time. I am certain his rise to success here in the US will be just as rapid as it has been in Europe.

The band released their self-titled debut album in 2012 which went quadruple platinum, and they quickly became the most popular live act in Denmark. I hear they put on an amazing live show … just missed one last week in NYC (Darn!). Enjoy … it sure feels good to be back. 🙂

Song of the Day – “Stolen Dance” by Milky Chance

A quick song at the end of a very, very long day. I am exhausted, but refuse to skip Day 2 of my new posting run. 🙂

This song is by the German duo, Milky Chance, and is off their debut album, Sadnecessary. The duo is made up of singer/songwriter Clemens Rehbein and DJ Philipp Daush who met in an “Advanced Music Course” in the eleventh grade. You may already be familiar with them and this song, but my son and I kept listening to it while driving to and from the airport for a golf tournament a few weeks ago and I just have wanted to share it ever since.

Okay, it is only 9pm, but I am physically and mentally exhausted … I am off to bed. No stolen dance for me tonight. 😉

“In Your Arms” by Nico & Vinz

On Thursday night I attended a great concert at Beacon Theatre in NYC – Fresh 102.7 Fall Fest. This was the second Fresh Fall Fest and, after attending last year, I was not going to miss it. Last year they had an incredible lineup with Kodaline, American Authors, Daughtry (playing an acoustic set), and The Fray. It was a fabulous show!

This year when I heard the lineup announced, I knew that I was going to make it an annual event. First, let me say that Beacon Theatre is such an incredible venue – just a beautiful, iconic theatre. Second, who gets all those incredible acts together for one night? Fresh 102.7 did a great job of lining up some amazing performers who provided concert goers with a fabulous 3 hour show! We were entertained by Nico & Vinz, Bleachers, Matt Nathanson, Ingrid Michaelson, and Neon Trees.

Last year, both Kodaline and American Authors were the rising artists who got a huge introduction at the show, Daughtry was a big name who played an acoustic set which made it a unique experience, and then we had the big finale by The Fray. This year, it was hard to determine who was the main act. Obviously, Nico & Vinz are rising artists and fit that bill, as does Bleachers (even though Jack Antonoff is a member of the popular band, Fun.). Matt Nathanson played an incredible acoustic set, but there were still two acts left to follow – Ingrid Michaelson and Neon Trees. Really, both of them could have been considered the closing act and they both performed like they were. The performances were amazing and incredibly entertaining.

Today, I just wanted to quickly post a song by Nico & Vinz, one of the rising artists from the night. Nico & Vinz, (Nicolas “Nico” Sereba and Vincent Dery) from Oslo, Norway, have a great stage presence and a really fun sound. I found them thoroughly entertaining and adorable – I especially loved watching Vincent Dery dance. 🙂 I am certain that you are already familiar with their Song of the Summer, “Am I Wrong.” If not, click on the song to have a listen. The second single from their debut album, Black Star Elephant, which was just released this month, is today’s song of the day. It is a song that I just really love and the video is actually very powerful. Nico & Vinz have a sound that is very unexpected. The music combines pop, Afro beat, hip hop, R&B, and reggae; and their lyrics are very powerful with a message to share. They sound fantastic together! I hope that you like this song as much as I do … I just can’t seem to get it out of my head.

SONG OF THE DAY – “HERO” by Enrique Iglesias

It’s Throwback Thursday! Today’s #tbt song is from the the 2001 album, Escape, by Enrique Iglesias.

It is difficult to believe that it has been 13 years since the 9/11 attacks. Today’s song always comes to my mind on this day.

I still remember the exact moment when I learned that a plane hit the World Trade Center. I was living in southern California at the time and had two small children home – ages 2 and 5. We have always been early risers and my kids were already up sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast just before 6am, and my husband had just left for work. I had the Today Show playing in the family room and I remember hearing in the background that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I immediately ran over to the TV and sat and watched as live coverage was shown. I called my husband to tell him and sat there with him on the phone as I watched live coverage of the second plane flying into the second tower, and then watched the towers collapse. It was an unbelievable moment and one I will never forget. I can actually remember feeling physically ill.

Sometimes the whole event is still so surreal. I often forget that there was life before 9/11. My children really have not known life before 9/11, being only 5 and 2 when it happened. There is certainly a post-9/11 world and that is their reality.

This song brings back all of those memories for me because I remember about a week later there was a 9/11 tribute show called “America: A Tribute To Heroes” that was simultaneously broadcast on all of the major networks plus other channels (totaling 35 stations!). It ran commercial free and was a telethon-style show that aired from three separate studios – Los Angeles, New York, and London – and raised money for all the victims of the tragedy. I remember sitting and watching every moment of that show with tears streaming down my face. It seemed that everyone was involved. I actually called in and made a donation 3 separate times that night as I was just so emotionally struck by the whole event – from the tragedy days earlier, to the outpouring of shock, love, and support from across the world. I think that is what I actually remember the most: People and the feeling of unity. It was truly amazing.

For some reason, this song really resonated with me and Enrique’s performance was so incredibly emotional that I have just never forgotten it. I wanted to share that performance with you today in remembrance of 9/11. I would love to hear your memories of that day and hope you will share.

Never, Ever Forget. Peace and love!

SONG OF THE DAY – “MASTER PRETENDER” by First Aid Kit

Just a quick note on this lovely Saturday afternoon.

I am posting a song today from two sisters who form the talented Swedish-duo, First Aid Kit. I love finding bands that so many other musicians are talking about. This group is one of those bands. First Aid Kit is made up of sisters, Johanna and Klara Soderberg, from a suburb outside of Stockholm, Sweden. They have great vocals and create amazing harmonies.

The song is from their third album, and the first one from a major label (Columbia). The album was released in the US just a few days ago – June 10, 2014. They are performing at Bonaroo this weekend and are very popular festival performers. They are young and love to tour; currently on tour, they would be a great live show.

SONG OF THE DAY – “CUANDO ME ENAMORO” by Enrique Iglesias & Juan Luis Guerra

It’s Throwback Thursday! Today’s #tbt song was originally posted as my daughter’s Song of the Day in the fall of 2010, although I have to admit that she was the one who introduced the song to me.

I love this song! Even if you don’t know Spanish at all, you can totally relate to what the song is saying. The harmony made by Enrique Iglesias and Juan Luis Guerra is fabulous and just wonderful to listen to. The music video is also pretty cute.

After spending some time in Puerto Rico over the last week, I realize how much I really love the Spanish language and how lame I am at speaking it. I wish that I had made it more of a priority to fully learn a foreign language when I was growing up. I speak a little of a few languages, but I am not fluent in anything other than English. I lived in Germany while I was in college and I was nearly fluent at that time, but I really never spoke it again after I returned home and I lost it pretty quickly. I am seriously considering doing an immersion program at some time in the near future.

Cuando Me Enamoro” is from Enrique Iglesias’ 2010 album, Euphoria. The album was his first bilingual album, with nearly an equal number of original English and Spanish language songs. Enrique Iglesias was born in Madrid, Spain and is the son of singer, Julio Iglesias. He has won a plethora of awards and has often been referred to as “The King of Latin Pop.” He is also one of the best-selling Spanish language artists of all time. Disfrutar de la musica. Tener un gran dia!

My teenagers often tell me that I am technologically challenged.  I have to remind them that I am much better than most parents.  (This may or may not be true, but it makes me feel better.)

It is sometimes hard to believe that I grew up without the computer.  I still vividly remember taking Type Class in high school and – yes! – it was on a typewriter.  So, I think my kids should give me a break.  Yes, they are better than me at almost all things technology based, but they have grown up with it since birth.  I think that makes me (and all of you not born in the 90s) pretty amazing.  Just look at how far we have come in such a short period of time.  I had to learn all of these things after my brain had stopped growing!

Anyway, enough about my awesomeness … there is a reason to this post.  Today I am starting a new type of post for Thursdays – “TBT” or “Throw Back Thursday.”  This has been popular on social media for some time with people posting old photos, but I am going to transfer that to Songs of the Day.  I started posting a Song of the Day on my daughter’s Facebook page 4 years ago and we have shared a tremendous amount of music together.  Starting today, on every Thursday I will post a TBT song from one of those days that begin back in October 2009.  The song I selected today is a favorite of mine.  It just exemplifies emotion in music.

Well, gotta run … I am learning how to Tweet today.  I will catch up to those youngsters yet.
