“In Your Arms” by Nico & Vinz

October 19, 2014

On Thursday night I attended a great concert at Beacon Theatre in NYC – Fresh 102.7 Fall Fest. This was the second Fresh Fall Fest and, after attending last year, I was not going to miss it. Last year they had an incredible lineup with Kodaline, American Authors, Daughtry (playing an acoustic set), and The Fray. It was a fabulous show!

This year when I heard the lineup announced, I knew that I was going to make it an annual event. First, let me say that Beacon Theatre is such an incredible venue – just a beautiful, iconic theatre. Second, who gets all those incredible acts together for one night? Fresh 102.7 did a great job of lining up some amazing performers who provided concert goers with a fabulous 3 hour show! We were entertained by Nico & Vinz, Bleachers, Matt Nathanson, Ingrid Michaelson, and Neon Trees.

Last year, both Kodaline and American Authors were the rising artists who got a huge introduction at the show, Daughtry was a big name who played an acoustic set which made it a unique experience, and then we had the big finale by The Fray. This year, it was hard to determine who was the main act. Obviously, Nico & Vinz are rising artists and fit that bill, as does Bleachers (even though Jack Antonoff is a member of the popular band, Fun.). Matt Nathanson played an incredible acoustic set, but there were still two acts left to follow – Ingrid Michaelson and Neon Trees. Really, both of them could have been considered the closing act and they both performed like they were. The performances were amazing and incredibly entertaining.

Today, I just wanted to quickly post a song by Nico & Vinz, one of the rising artists from the night. Nico & Vinz, (Nicolas “Nico” Sereba and Vincent Dery) from Oslo, Norway, have a great stage presence and a really fun sound. I found them thoroughly entertaining and adorable – I especially loved watching Vincent Dery dance. 🙂 I am certain that you are already familiar with their Song of the Summer, “Am I Wrong.” If not, click on the song to have a listen. The second single from their debut album, Black Star Elephant, which was just released this month, is today’s song of the day. It is a song that I just really love and the video is actually very powerful. Nico & Vinz have a sound that is very unexpected. The music combines pop, Afro beat, hip hop, R&B, and reggae; and their lyrics are very powerful with a message to share. They sound fantastic together! I hope that you like this song as much as I do … I just can’t seem to get it out of my head.

Today’s song is from Joshua Radin’s new album (Wax Wings) which was released earlier this year. He just wrapped up a tour with Matt Nathanson. I have seen him in concert live two times, as a support act for Sara Bareilles and support for Colbie Caillat. He has a very mellow, smooth voice and is just an incredible musician. I really like this new song with it’s uplifting beat and great lyrics.

Joshua Radin got his his big break on TV … literally, his song “Winter” was picked up for the TV series Scrubs in 2004 by the creator of the show. After having several songs appear on the series, fans were requesting more music from the artist. He obliged. 🙂 I think this is a song that you will have on repeat – if not on your music player it will certainly be on repeat in your head. Enjoy!

Can you believe it is December? I have to say that I hate when Thanksgiving falls so late; it just puts the two big holidays right on top of each other. Luckily we got the Christmas tree up yesterday before my daughter returned to school for the last few weeks before finals. Already miss having all of us together.

Are you ready for the holidays? What music do you like listening to during the holidays? Would love to hear from you about your favorites.

It is supposed to get to 66 degrees today! We got snow and freezing temperatures last week, but today is absolutely beautiful – sunshine and warm temperatures. I can’t wait to get outside and down to the beach for a run!

I am posting an old favorite, but by an artist who is on fire right now. He is one of the performers featured on VH1’s You Ought to Know Concert which will be broadcast this Thursday and he is just winding up a tour for mostly sold out crowds across the country.

My daughter and I saw him live just this summer at an outdoor concert and it was probably one of the most entertaining shows I have ever seen. I think you would have to describe his show as part musical concert, part comedy show. I would definitely put him on your must see live list.

Matt Nathanson is an incredibly talented musician AND he is hilarious! He is chatty! It made me feel like I was just standing around in the backyard listening to a friend tell some funny stories and then … he started to sing. He is dang good! We had to brave an incredibly heavy rainstorm to see him perform, but I would not have missed it and I can tell you not a single soul left when the rain started coming down in buckets – and he kept entertaining us. My daughter and I were also totally giggling about the way he moves those hips when he dances. 🙂

His most recent album, Last of the Great Pretenders has been his best album debut so far and I have really enjoyed it. My favorites off that album include “Mission Bells,” “Sky High Honey,” “Kinks Shirt,” and “Annie’s Always Waiting.” He released his first album in 1993, but I have to say it was his album Some Mad Hope in 2007 that drew me in as a full-fledged fan. The Song of the Day is from that album. I have posted an acoustic video of the song and the full recorded version on iTunes, so you should check out both.
