Today I want to post a brand new song … just released today.

I love Mumford & Sons! I first saw them perform live while living in London, England. Their song “Little Lion Man” was brand new and I heard that they were going to be performing at Pure Groove – a small record shoppe in London. My two young children (ages 13 and 10!) came home from school and I told them, “Get ready. We are going to a concert!” They were the only kids there, but what an experience. 🙂

Pure Groove is a tiny little spot and it was probably the second most intimate concert experience I have ever had. We were literally about 15 feet from the band. It was fabulous! We followed Mumford & Sons the entire time we lived in London as they became a real London-based, local favorite. Then we moved back to the US a year later and we got to watch their ascent here as they were really just being introduced in the US. It was such an interesting experience to watch the same band become famous twice.

The band has just finished a new album – Wilder Mind – after a two year break from their last album. “Believe” is the first single released from the album, which is available for preorder now with an expected release date of May 4. I love the new sound of this song and the electronic music they have incorporated; it is very different from their banjo-playing folk style that made them so popular. The first time I listened to the song I was reminded of Coldplay, particularly during the first half of the song.

I am really excited to hear the rest of the new album and the creative effort that they put into it. How do you like it?

SONG OF THE DAY – “PRINCESS OF CHINA” by Coldplay & Rihanna

It’s Throwback Thursday! Today’s #tbt song is by one of my favorite groups and is the perfect song for today in China!

I am feeling very lucky to get to be with my Princess in China, and today we are off to see the jewel of China.

We are heading out to hike the Great Wall of China. We are not going to the refurbished, tourist section of the wall, but instead we have hired a guide to take us out climbing and hiking in a much more rugged area. I did a lot of research and our guide came highly recommended by many people who I spoke with from all over the world. (That, in itself, was fun! I reached out to people from all over the world regarding a shared experience and we instantly connected. Friends are everywhere!) Anyway, this sounds like the perfect adventure for me and my daughter. I am so excited and imagine I will have some great pictures to share.

Today’s song just resonated with me for an adventure day in China. I am so excited to be here and the video is an awesome look into the romance and allure of China. “Princess of China” is from Coldplay’s 2011 album, Mylo Xyloto. We saw Coldplay in concert following this album. It was the second time the entire family went to see Coldplay in concert – the first time was at Wembley Stadium in London in 2009 and the second time was in Dallas in 2012 – and so Coldplay is always at the top of my list as a family favorite.

Off to conquer the wall and marvel at a wonder of the world. I am feeling blessed today.

SONG OF THE DAY – “WORRY” by Jack Garratt

I just got home from visiting my son in South Carolina for a few days for his 16th birthday. It was awesome to get to spend time with him! I have been trying to decide if I came home less worried or more worried about him. Haha!

It is such a strange feeling to go visit your teenage boy in his “apartment” and say “yep, that is how I would keep my space.” Yikes! Teenage boys are messy. He keeps reminding me that his apartment was one of only two that passed house inspections … so I should be pleased. Hmm …

Anyway, he is doing incredibly well at his new school and loves it. He is happy, settled, social, and motivated! As much as I miss him, this makes me very happy. I am very proud of him, even if I do worry about him and miss him every day.

The alligators down there also worry me! 🙂

I have been wanting to post this cool new song and I thought the title was just perfect today. Jack Garratt is a young artist from London, England who just released his first EP, Remnants, a few months ago. His music is very unique and is difficult to box into a genre. He has an incredible amount of soul and emotion in his music. It is an interesting song to add to my playlist, but I think Jack Garratt is extremely talented and creates incredibly interesting music. Listen to the unique beat, rhythm, and lyrics that he uses in his music. I hope that you enjoy this new song by a young, rising artist. I am sure we will hear much more from him in the future.

SONG OF THE DAY – “FLAWS” by Bastille

Happy Music Monday!

I absolutely love this song! I think the music is perfect and the lyrics are amazing. It is just such an honest view of how we look at ourselves and our flaws. My favorite lyrics are:

All of your flaws and all of my flaws
When they have been exhumed
We’ll see that we need them to be who we are
Without them we’d be doomed

The song is by Bastille, a rock band from London, England. I am certain that most of you will know them by their tremendously popular song, “Pompeii.” Many people may be unfamiliar with any of Bastille’s music other than “Pompeii” because that is the only song that is ever played on the radio. For me, that is a downside to popular radio, they find a song they like by a band and then they overplay it to death. The band actually has a lot of great music and I hope that you will enjoy this song (my favorite) from their Bad Blood album, released in the US in September 2013.

Bastille (named for Bastille Day, which is Smith’s birthday) was originally started as a solo project by singer-songwriter, Dan Smith. The band is now composed of the very talented Dan Smith (singer, songwriter, keyboard player, and producer), Will Farquarson (bass), Chris Wood (drummer), and Kyle Simmons (keyboard player). They all perform back-up vocals, and the chemistry among the band is amazing. Bastille was honored this year at the Brit Awards with British Breakthrough Act of the year. The band was also nominated for three other awards – British Group of the Year, British Single of the Year (for Pompeii), and British Album of the Year. They have been called “the word-of-mouth success of 2013!”

Embrace your flaws! It makes us who we are … and who wants to be anyone else? 🙂

I have attached two versions of this song because they are both amazing – one was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and is literally an amazing acoustic version backed by a room full of strings, and the other is another acoustic version with keyboard, guitar and hand drums. Just both very cool! I would love the Last.fm sessions version on my iPod.

SONG OF THE DAY – “HOLDING ONTO HEAVEN” by Foxes

Just a quick note today. I picked up my girl from college this morning. She finished her sophomore year. Crazy! Where does the time go? I get to have her home for a few days before she takes off for an internship for the rest of the summer. They grow up and time gets so short and precious … I feel like I am holding on to every minute. Holding onto heaven while she is here.

I really like this song today by rising artist, Foxes. Foxes is the stage name of British singer-songwriter, Louisa Rose Allen from Southampton (now based in London). Foxes has been the featured artist on many albums with other artists, most notably “Clarity” by Zedd which won a 2014 Grammy Award for “Best Dance Recording” (also Rudimental and Fall Out Boy). She has since devoted her time to her solo career and songwriting, releasing her debut album, Glorious, earlier this month (not yet released in the US). She has an amazing voice and I find this song incredibly addictive. It will be interesting to see where she goes from here.

SONG OF THE DAY – “FEELS LIKE COMING HOME” by Jetta

May 19, 2014

Download_on_iTunes_Badge_US-UK_110x40_1004

I just returned from a very quick trip “home.” Home to the place where I spent the first 24 years of my life and where both my family and my husband’s family still live. We have not been home for a visit in almost two years and it just felt incredibly nice to be there. The thing that I loved the most about being there was the time I was able to spend reconnecting with family.

There is so much that I love about being “home” and yet, at the same time, so much about it that feels foreign and disconnected from me. Having grown up there, I notice many things that never change, but at the same time, I realize that so much has changed … that I have changed.

While I was there I kept thinking about this song. Obviously it talks about home and so that seems like a natural reason for the selection, but that is not what drew me to this song. There is just something about the feeling and tone of this song that speaks to me. The song gives a sense of peace about coming home and that feeling of “it feels like I’ve come home,” but there is also something about the song that feels melancholy. To me, that is what it feels like to “come home.”

This is an amazingly beautiful song by Jetta, a young UK singer-songwriter who was born in Liverpool and is currently based in London. She grew up with two musical parents and has been involved with music most of her life. While only a teenager, Jetta spent two years as a backup vocalist for Paloma Faith and, after that, she went on to sing backup for CeeLo Green before breaking out on her own. During all that time, she was busily writing her own music and in 2012 Jetta released an amazing independent video of her song, “Start a Riot” which led her to a record deal. In March of this year, she was listed as one of the “10 New Artists You Need to Know” by Rolling Stone magazine. Even if you don’t think you know her as an artist, you probably have heard this song before as it was the featured song for Google Zeitgist’s “Here’s to 2013 ad campaign (a must watch video, with over 30 million views). Her debut album is expected out this year – keep your eye out for it.

SONG OF THE DAY – “PLEASE DON’T SAY YOU LOVE ME” by Gabrielle Aplin

May 7, 2014

Download_on_iTunes_Badge_US-UK_110x40_1004

The last few days I have been able to get outside for a run in close to 60 degree weather. What a joy! I love the sunshine, being in my running shorts, and having to stop halfway thru the run to remove my long sleeve top and tie it around my waist. That is just pure pleasure. 🙂

Another pleasure is listening to today’s artist. I am posting a song by a young artist (21 years old!) from the UK that I have been a fan of for several years. I have followed Gabrielle Aplin‘s music since 2011 and have often had to purchase it from the UK iTunes site since the songs were not available here in the US. I am, therefore, very excited to announce that her album, English Rain, (which was released in the UK this month last year) was finally released here in the US yesterday (May 6, 2014). In addition to the album release yesterday, she also performed live in concert in NYC last night. I am excited to see her extend her reach into the States and I thought it was a perfect day to post another song by her. I posted my favorite song by her – “Home” – on this page back in December.

I find Gabrielle Aplin‘s music just very honest and easy to listen to. I really like this song and I love the video I have attached where you can watch her perform in her element, standing by herself playing the guitar (or the piano) and singing. She received her first guitar from her parents at age 11 and says that she was influenced musically by listening to her parents’ Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen albums. She is an incredibly talented young lady! Her full EP is definitely worth checking out and I am certain we will hear more from this rising young star.

As you know, another favorite musical group of mine from that side of the pond (Ireland) is Hudson Taylor. The brothers, Alfie and Harry, and Gabrielle are great mates who have known each other for over four years when they all moved to London. In fact, I have discovered that Alfie and Gabrielle are dating… so cute! It is fun to watch these young artists develop friendships with each other and support each other in their respective journeys. Let me know what you think about today’s song – I would love to hear from you.
