I am traveling with my son at a golf tournament this week in (what feels like) the Middle of Nowhere, Massachusetts. I’m sure it is not as isolated as it feels, but it definitely feels like I am in small town New England. It is lovely out here and the course is beautiful; however, I could not get internet access out here yesterday. Luckily I have it today, so I am taking advantage of it now while I have it.

Today’s song is completely different from the one posted on Monday, but it is just as awesome. That is one of the things that I love most about music!

I absolutely adore the feeling of this song. It just makes me feel good and brings a smile. I think it is because I feel the same attitude that the song title suggests and I really find that feeling empowering. The lyrics of this song are inspiring. One of my favorite lines is:

“You’ve got to fill your mind with new horizons or your dreams will pack their bags.”

Those words make me feel like I need to get moving and exploring new things, be more creative, adventurous, and jump in and take a risk. I find that I feel like I can when I listen to this song. I challenge you to listen to the song and watch the video below and see if you can do it without smiling. I can’t do it … I smile every single time. I am sitting here at the golf clubhouse restaurant and I think people must be thinking I am some crazy woman as I am sitting at my computer with headphones on and a stupid grin on my face. haha! Maybe I should turn the volume up and play it for the crowd.

I know it’s strange and I digress

The fact that we can’t understand

The meaning of this life

Sometimes it’s hard to find,

But if we learn to look between the lines of things

And if we’ll open up our eyes we’re going to see

The sunrise.

Everything, everything’s gonna be alright, gonna be alright!

Mike Mains & The Branches are an Indie Rock Band with a great sound. The band was originally formed in Gainseville, Texas in 2009, but that same year relocated to Michigan, which is the home state of Mains and Briggs. The band consists of Mike Mains, Shannon (Briggs) Mains,  and Nate Wethy (Mike and Shannon were married in 2012). Today’s song is from their sophomore album, Calm Down, Everything Is Fine, just released in February 2014 and entirely funded by a PledgeMusic campaign.

Enjoy!

Well, I disappeared for a few days … it was unintentional. It has been one of those weeks, where there seems to be way too many things to deal with at one time. I had a few big projects that had to be finished up this week and I thought that would clear up my schedule immensely, but all it did was create a longer “to do” list because of all the other tasks that were neglected in favor of solely focussing on the “big” project. Ugh!

Does that ever happen to you? I believe that may be why I tend to put off those big projects until the last-minute, because I know they are going to mess with all the other things that need to get done. Anyway, I did attempt to post every day, but my attempts were unsuccessful. I think I may need to get over my idea of perfect and just post something rather than worrying about it being “right” every single day. Maybe that will also help me clear my list. 🙂 I would not describe myself as a perfectionist, but I certainly have some of those tendencies, which are annoying.

So, now that the weekend is here, I am adjusting the schedule again and getting everything back on track. Well … at least for today. 🙂

Today’s song is from the 2007 album by Band of Horses, called Cease To Begin, but the song caught my attention when it was released last month on their live acoustic album – Acoustic at The Ryman (Live). So, although the song is not new, it is new to me and I am just totally taken by it. The raw emotion captured in this song is haunting and completely captivating. The song is absolutely beautiful and Ben Bridwell’s voice is incredible.

The band was formed by Bridwell in 2004 and has five members. Their sound is interesting and unique and has been hailed as Alternative Country, Indie rock, and Southern rock. Two other songs that I really enjoy by them, include: “The General Specific” – a very cool country sound which just makes me want to dance, and “The Great Salt Lake” – obviously due to my Salt Lake roots, haha. Hope you enjoy the music today and have a great weekend!

A quick note tonight. I just got home after a long travel day and I am finally sitting down to write and post a song. It was my time to come home, but what a shock that cold weather was to my system when I stepped off that plane. Yikes!

Today’s song is from a band called Caveman. Caveman is a 5-member band that formed in 2010 and hails from Brooklyn, New York. This song is from their 2011 album, “Coco Beware,” but they just released their second album in 2013. Caveman produces a very unique sound and I really enjoy this song. Hope you like it too.

Sorry to keep it short, but I am exhausted. 🙂 Also, I need to prepare myself for the “Polar Vortex” that is arriving again on the east coast again this week. haha! Spring is coming, right?

SONG OF THE DAY – “HARLEM” by New Politics

Today I just really want to post a fun song that makes me feel like moving. It is a great song for working out, dancing, or just bouncing your head while sitting down at work. I really love the sound and find it such fun. The song is not new and many of you may already be familiar with it, but it is a great song to add to your playlist if you have not already done so.

New Politics is an Indie-rock group originally from Copenhagen, Denmark who now make Brooklyn, New York home. They have released two albums and today’s song is from their sophomore album, A Bad Girl in Harlem, which was released in May 2013. The band seems to constantly be on tour and has a reputation for having an incredibly energetic stage performance. I have not seen them live yet, but they are currently on tour and I think they would be a fun group to see in action.

This song is such a great combination of drums, guitar and electronics and they fuse pop music and a punk sound seamlessly. It is great dance music and just plain fun. How can you not get up and move to this song? Watch the video and you will see what I mean. 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY – “I NEED MY GIRL” by The National

Snowed in again today! Woke up to 8 new inches of snow and then it started to sleet which put a nice layer of ice on top of it all. My husband was meant to fly out to California this morning, but with the crazy weather warnings, he made a quick change of plans and flew out last night. Good thing he did as all flights were canceled this morning. I got a text at 4:28 am this morning letting me know that he had just arrived. That is the joy of flying across the country and 3 time zones! The crazy things we do!

I am posting a song today by The National. The band was formed in Cincinnati, Ohio back in 1999 and are now based in Brooklyn. Their 2013 album release, Trouble Will Find Me, was nominated for a Grammy this year for Best Alternative Album.

The band is made up of Matt Berninger (the baritone singer & lyrics writer) and two pairs of brothers: twins, Aaron and Bryce Dessner (guitarists), and Scott and Bryan Devendorf (bass and drums). Matt writes the lyrics to the songs, and the rest of the guys contribute to writing the music. It sounds like they make a very cooperative team in their creative process. I love the texture of their music and I think they would be incredible to see live.

The band had a slow start, but have progressively gained more and more followers, critically acclaimed albums, and strong reviews. They have been considered, by some, as one of the most “distinctive underground rock bands of the last decade.” In a 2007 article by TheSceneStar, their lyrics were described as “dark, melancholy, and difficult to interpret.” Matt Berninger indicated that he would say “… they’re on the darker side of the spectrum …” but he wouldn’t classify them or himself as being dark.

I would definitely call their music moody and melancholy, and I can only take them in small doses (or when my mood is in the same place!), but I really love this song. Have you ever had anyone say to you, “I need my girl.” It is such an incredibly honest and vulnerable statement, and a powerful message on the receiving end. I totally think they caught the moment in this song.

I hope you enjoy the music today. Definitely different from yesterday’s rap … I like to keep it interesting. 🙂
