SONG OF THE DAY – “STRONG” by London Grammar

April 28, 2014

Today I am posting a very different sound from the last post. This song is by London Grammar, a young trio out of (surprisingly) London.Their sound is very ethereal and atmospheric and I find it almost haunting. This song is both beautiful and mesmerizing, and the lyrics are gut wrenching.

London Grammar consists of Hannah Reid (vocalist), Dominic ‘Dot’ Major (keyboards & drums) and Dan Rothman (guitar). Hannah and Dan are both originally from London and they combined with Dot (a Northampton native) while the three were all students at the University of Nottingham. Hannah Reid has one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard. Many have likened her voice to Florence Welch (Florence & The Machine) and I also made that comparison when I first listened to the trio. I am amazed at the range that Hannah has in her voice and how she can carry the entire song. Hannah also does the majority of the song writing (in particular, the lyrics), but the threesome is credited with writing the entirety of the music together.

London Grammar released their debut album – If You Wait – in September of 2013 after a long wait by their ever growing fan base. That fan base has expanded into the US, as earlier this year they performed at SXSW, performed on many popular late night shows, and did some touring across the States. I imagine they will just continue to grow in popularity and I think it will be interesting to see what they do next. The trio has received many accolades and, in fact, this song was nominated for the 59th Ivor Novello Awards for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. The Awards will take place on Thursday 22 May.

The Ivors are internationally respected for honouring excellence in British music

I hope you enjoy this song. I believe the music will just draw you in and you will find it to be the perfect song for those more mellow, reflective moments. Let me know what you think.

Posting a fun and catchy song today. Eric Hutchinson is another of the many talented artists who have come out of a Boston college. I have been amazed at the number of young artists who attended university and got their start in Boston. In Eric Hutchinson’s case, he attended Emerson College. I am probably more aware of this interesting fact since my daughter also attends college in the Boston area and so it always catches my eye.

Today’s song is from Eric Hutchinson’s 2012 album, Moving Up Living Down. Hutchinson owes much of his initial success to a mention by Perez Hilton, one of the most famous and followed bloggers in the world, on his blog in the summer of 2007 when he raved about his album. After that mention, his current album at that time (Sounds Like This) shot up to the Top Ten most downloaded albums on iTunes. I find it very cool that musicians can be discovered and promoted by those of us who love the artist and their music. I hope that if you are not familiar with Eric Hutchinson, this little shout out about this song will help you discover him. I love the lyrics of his songs – such a creative songwriter!

SONG OF THE DAY – “CITY OF ANGELS” by Thirty Seconds to Mars

March 3, 2014

I have a song that I have wanted to share for some time and, after the Academy Awards last night, today seemed like the perfect day to share it.

Are any of you as smitten with Jared Leto as I am? I think he is amazing! His performance as Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club was incredible and he was totally deserving of his Oscar win for Actor in a Supporting Role (along with the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards!). I read that Leto stayed in character 24 hours a day during filming so that he could totally immerse himself into the character. This commitment to development of the character is evident in his performance. Truly remarkable.

Leto is a gifted actor and yet that only scratches the surface of his many talents. He is also the lead vocalist, main songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist for the critically acclaimed band, Thirty Seconds to Mars. He formed the band in Los Angeles in 1998 with his older brother, Shannon Leto. In addition to acclaimed actor and musician, he is also a Director, Producer, Philanthropist, Photographer, and Businessman. He doesn’t do much at all!

Jared Leto is also just a beautiful man. haha! If you watched the Academy Awards last night, or any of the pre- or post- shows, you would certainly have heard people commenting non-stop on his looks. He has been listed twice -in 1996 and 1999- on People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People.” And for beauty on the inside 😉 , I found the comments he made about his mother in his Oscar acceptance speech very sweet.

I love this passionate song about Los Angeles by Thirty Seconds to Mars. It is difficult not to get immersed in the song – the very personal lyrics and the music are mesmerizing. The song is from their 2013 album, LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS. A very busy year for a very talented guy!

SONG OF THE DAY – “HAPPY” by Pharrell Williams

February 22, 2013

Today I am posting what my son and I have deemed our “theme song” for our trip to Arizona. We have spent nearly every minute of our time outside in the fabulous sunshine and blue skies. It just makes us feel happy and so does this song! We have been “clapping along” and have probably been spotted looking like many of the people shown in this fantastic music video. 🙂

We may slowly be killing the song as we have listened to it so much over the last few days, but what else would you do with a theme song? This is a great song by Pharrell Williams, who I think is just one of the coolest dudes in the music industry. He has also got to be on the busiest guys in the industry – producer, fashion designer, songwriter, drummer, performer … what doesn’t he do?

This has been an especially big year for Pharrell. He was nominated for 7 Grammy Awards, including one for this song; in addition, this song was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song (from the movie Despicable Me). He also played a key role in one of 2013’s biggest hits and Grammy award-winning song – “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. He is an amazingly talented guy. Something else about him that I think is amazing … Pharrell is 40 years old, but have you seen him? He looks like he is 25!
