Today I want to post a brand new song … just released today.

I love Mumford & Sons! I first saw them perform live while living in London, England. Their song “Little Lion Man” was brand new and I heard that they were going to be performing at Pure Groove – a small record shoppe in London. My two young children (ages 13 and 10!) came home from school and I told them, “Get ready. We are going to a concert!” They were the only kids there, but what an experience. 🙂

Pure Groove is a tiny little spot and it was probably the second most intimate concert experience I have ever had. We were literally about 15 feet from the band. It was fabulous! We followed Mumford & Sons the entire time we lived in London as they became a real London-based, local favorite. Then we moved back to the US a year later and we got to watch their ascent here as they were really just being introduced in the US. It was such an interesting experience to watch the same band become famous twice.

The band has just finished a new album – Wilder Mind – after a two year break from their last album. “Believe” is the first single released from the album, which is available for preorder now with an expected release date of May 4. I love the new sound of this song and the electronic music they have incorporated; it is very different from their banjo-playing folk style that made them so popular. The first time I listened to the song I was reminded of Coldplay, particularly during the first half of the song.

I am really excited to hear the rest of the new album and the creative effort that they put into it. How do you like it?

“Show Me Emotion” by The Dunwells

I am posting a song today by a band that I have posted from before – the English, folk-rock band, The Dunwells. I saw The Dunwells perform live back in 2012 while living in Dallas, and I immediately liked them. They have a great sound, wonderful song-writing, fantastic harmonies, and just a cool vibe.

The band is made up of brothers David and Joseph Dunwell, and cousins Robert Clayton and Johnny Lamb. (The band used to be five members, but guitarist, David Hanson, left the band to start his own band.) They just released their second studio album on September 8, 2014. The new EP is entitled, Show Me Emotion and it does just that. It is a different sound than their first album and I loved their old sound … but, I also really like this new sound too.

The Dunwells just finished touring in the UK in September and are headed to California this month. They are great live performers, particularly in an intimate setting where you can really hear those incredible harmonies. If you get a chance to see them, take it! I am hoping they make it to the east coast and will be keeping my eye out for them.

Sometimes at the end of a long day with a lot of moving pieces I do feel overcome with emotion for some reason. Sometimes I feel incredibly happy and other times I feel on the verge of tears. Today has been one of those days. This song just seemed like a perfect fit, just enough emotion to let me settle into my end of day. I really hope you enjoy this new song.

SONG OF THE DAY – “SHOUT IT” by Southern

Just a quick note today as I am sitting at the airport waiting for a red-eye flight home from California to New York. It has been a busy and beautiful 3 days in Northern California.

I just want to share a really fun and very upbeat song. I am trying to keep myself energized and awake until the moment I board that airplane so that I can fall asleep and I have listened to this song about 10 times!

Southern is a young brother-sister duo from Belfast, Ireland, which consists of Thom and Lucy Southern. They have this amazing folksy blues sound which is just really cool. They make great music together which is upbeat, a little raucous, and just a lot of fun. They released their debut, self-titled album, Southern, in December. I think they have a great sound which will definitely lead to more. Gerry Anderson from BBC Radio called the band:

“The most promising singer/songwriters in Ireland today.”

Not much more to write today as I have to leave in 10 minutes to go catch my flight. I hope you like this song. Another good one to check out by Southern is called, “Where The Wild Are.” I will return to some regularity when I return to NY tomorrow. Here’s to hoping to get some sleep on that plane!

SONG OF THE DAY – “HEAD FULL OF DOUBT/ROAD FULL OF PROMISE” by The Avett Brothers

Well, it has been a very busy and somewhat overwhelming weekend.

I moved my daughter to Washington D.C. this weekend for a summer internship. We moved her into her Capitol Hill apartment on Friday evening and then the two of us got to spend the next two nights and all day Saturday together in that great city. It was really a wonderful time to get to spend with her as she was getting ready to start a whole new life adventure.

I must admit that it is a learning experience as a parent to leave my 18-year-old daughter alone in a city. Okay … not alone – she has two roommates, but she will not be with me and that is a little stressful for this mom. I find that I am in awe of her all the time – she is incredibly brave, adventurous, and accomplished. I know that she will be amazing! So, I am discovering that this is a learning experience for both of us. I am so very proud of her.

The Avett Brothers are awesome. I absolutely love their music! They combine Americana, folk, country, blue grass, a little pop, and rock and roll like no other band that I know. The band is made up of two Avett brothers (Scott and Seth), as well as Bob Crawford, Paul Defiglia, Joe Kwon, and Mike Marsh. Their music captures life and the emotion of all that life brings.

I got exposed to The Avett Brothers while I lived in Dallas. I was a little behind on this one, but I was an instant fan of their music and have to thank a friend of my daughter’s for introducing me to the band after listening to him sing an incredible rendition of their song, “I And Love And You.” I have not yet been able to see them live, but they are currently on tour and I am hoping to make it to one of their live shows this summer; I have heard that they are a live band not to be missed!

Today’s song is an older song (from the 2009 I And Love And You album), but it totally reminds me of my daughter and I wanted to post it for her today. Tomorrow is her first day at work and, although I know she is nervous, she will be fabulous! My daughter sees her dreams like very few people I know and it is exciting to watch her reach for them. I hope that you love this song as much as I do.

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it.
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I’ll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out.

SONG OF THE DAY – “CROSS MY MIND” by Twin Forks

I just got home from a quick trip to Dallas. It was fantastic to get to meet up with my husband in our old stomping ground for a fun weekend during the middle of his crazy travel schedule. We ate out at our favorite restaurants, drove past our old home, walked on the Katy Trail (our old running trail, but the broken back is not yet ready for a run yet!), and visited with some good friends. Even more importantly, my son got to spend the entire weekend with his two best friends!

When you move as often as I have, you sometimes realize how many memories and people you have left behind along the way. I have certainly felt it this year as I have made an effort to return to visit and reconnect with many old friends. It is not an easy task to maintain long distance friendships, but it is absolutely worth it … particularly when you find people with whom you really connect. Sometimes I find myself wishing that I had taken better advantage of the time together with people when I lived someplace, because suddenly that easy friendship is gone.

From time to time, you cross my mind; good company is hard to find.”

I love the connections that I have made along the way and wouldn’t trade my crazy life because I realize how many of them I would never have crossed paths with if not for this wild ride. I am also happy that so many of these friends are willing to maintain a long distance friendship, particularly with a friend who just snuck into their life for a brief moment. All those people cross my mind often!

I love this song and I love the musical sound of Twin Forks. The band was formed in early 2013 by Chris Carrabba, the lead singer and guitarist of the band Dashboard Confessional (posted a song by them on this page in November 2013). Dashboard Confessional was also started by singer-songwriter, Chris Carrabba, in the early 2000s as an intimate acoustic project, but grew into a full-fledged, successful emo rock band. In early 2013, Carrabba was inspired to return to the music that he loved and which had initially inspired him – classic folk and roots – and he formed the quartet known as Twin Forks. The band includes Carrabba, Suzie Zeldin, Ben Homola and Jonathan Clark. Carrabba is a very talented man and a fabulous songwriter and this project seems to have reinvigorated his musical and creative spirit. This song is from their self-titled album, Twin Forks, which was released in February of this year. There are many great songs on this album and a couple others that you might like to check out, include: “Can’t Be Broken” and “Kiss Me Darling.”

SONG OF THE DAY – “VOLCANO” by Damien Rice

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I feel like today demands a song from an Irish artist in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. There are so many incredibly talented artists from Ireland out there to choose from, but I chose to post a song from Damien Rice today because I have seen his name mentioned so many times recently as being the influence for numerous artists. He is one of those artists that has inspired an entire generation of musicians.

Damien Rice is an incredibly gifted singer-songwriter and musician from Ireland. He started his musical career with a rock band called Juniper in the 1990s and began his solo career in 2001. “Volcano” is an older song, released by him in 2003 on his album O. The first time that I heard this song and fell in love with it was during the 2012 American Idol season when Phillip Phillips performed his interpretation of the song. It was incredible and was the first song that I ever purchased of an American Idol performance. His version is also worth listening to as it is superb! Phillip Phillips is one of those young artists who lists Damien Rice as an influence and one of his favorite musicians.

Hope you remembered to wear green today! 😉 Happy St. Patrick’s Day and a shout out to all the incredibly talented Irish musicians out there.

SONG OF THE DAY – “I COULD BE A KING” by The Dunwells

It’s Throwback Thursday! Today’s #tbt song was originally posted as my daughter’s Song of the Day on October 15, 2012!

I was first introduced to The Dunwells in the summer of 2012. I had listened to their music online and was then lucky enough to see them perform live at #AloftLife – the Live at Aloft Hotels Festival 2012 in Dallas in October 2012. I love this song – great lyrics and a great musical sound (I love the banjo!).

.
The Dunwells are incredibly fun to watch perform live. They have amazing 5-part harmonies and just a casual, relaxed stage presence. I enjoy the sound of their music which is folksy, rootsy, and rock-inspired. The instruments are just a beautiful accompaniment to their voices, and I love the lyrics of their songs. They have been compared to the likes of Mumford & Sons and Crosby, Stills & Nash. When I first heard The Dunwells, Crosby, Stills & Nash came to my mind, I am sure mostly because of those amazing harmonies. The Boot (theboot.com), in an interview they conducted with them in January 2012, referred to their music as a “British spin on Americana music.”
.
The Dunwells are from Yorkshire, England and were formed in 2009. The band features two Dunwell brothers (Joseph & David Dunwell), one of their childhood friends (Jonny Lamb), Lamb’s cousin (Rob Clayton), and another local artist from their town (David Hanson). It is no wonder that their on-stage chemistry just screams comfortable. I hope that you enjoy this song and exploring this band’s music if you are not yet familiar with them. A couple other songs worth checking out from their 2012 released Blind Sighted Faith album include: “So Beautiful,” “Blind Sighted Faith,” “Elizabeth,” and “Follow the Road.”

SONG OF THE DAY – “BREATHE EASY” by Rachel Sermanni

Just a quick note. I want to introduce you to someone new today.
.
Rachel Sermanni is a young (22 years old) Scottish musician who is a rising star in the folk music scene in the UK. She has been touted as the next Laura Marling. Her first album, Under Mountains, was released in September 2012 and Rachel has been steadily touring across the UK, making her North American debut in 2013. She has supported many incredible performers since she began, including Mumford & Sons, KT Tunstall, Elvis Costello, and Michael Kiwanuka.
.
Rachel just released a new EP this year entitled “Everything Changes,” and I think we will hear much more from her in the future. Hope you enjoy this beautiful tune today and breathe easy … it is finally the weekend!
